Daytona State College sponsors free Techno Summer Camp

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (April 6, 2009) - Daytona State College wants to change the image of career and technical education (from the old vocational education label) for under-represented and non-traditional students and their parents.

To that end, Daytona State is sponsoring a free Techno Summer Camp for a select group of 7th and 8th graders from Volusia and Flagler county schools. The students will have a “hands-on”/project focused experience in two career areas; Automotive Performance, Construction/Drafting, Digital Design, Engineering/Manufacturing, Gaming and Simulation, Robotics, and Web Design. Students will spend one week in each core area for the two-week experience that starts Monday, June 15 at the Advanced Technology College located at 1770 Technology Blvd., Daytona Beach.

Parent involvement is highly encouraged. Parents will be invited to an evening presentation on students’ work after the first week. The Summer Techno Camp concludes with a ceremony that will feature student projects and an overview of career and technical education options for both the young students and adults; parents and their guests are invited to attend.

Participants will learn about the Career Academies, Secondary Career and Technical courses as well as the certificate, associate and baccalaureate degree opportunities at Daytona State College.

Gerald Frisby, associate vice president, Daytona State College, is working with the two school districts to identify students to attend this camp. To foster increased collaboration, the courses will be jointly taught by faculty from the College and the two school districts. Transportation will be provided. Students will need to bring their lunch. The program is free of charge.
