What should you know about H1N1 Flu?
Please follow this link for videos on the H1N1 Flu.
H1N1 Flu is a respiratory disease caused by type A influenza viruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that the new H1N1 Flu cases are caused by an influenza strain called H1N1, which appears to be easily transmitted from person to person. The most common method of transmission is airborne, and it is also possible to become infected by touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching one's mouth or nose. The CDC is advising people to wash their hands frequently, and also to avoid surfaces that might be contaminated.
How can you protect yourself and your family?
There are everyday steps to help protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately after wash handsusing.
- Wash your hands frequently using soap and warm water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners or sanitizers are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid close contact with people who are ill.
If you do get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
