Honors College Classes


Honors classes are small, generally limited to no more than 25 students, and they are innovative, challenging, and discussion-oriented as well. Honors College students cite the challenging, innovative and multidisciplinary classes and highly skilled Honors College faculty as one of the best things about their Honors College experience. The list of Honors College courses changes from semester to semester. For a list of courses offered in the coming semester, check out the current college catalog.

New Students: 

Current Daytona State College Students and Transfer Students:
Transfer students, or current Daytona State College students, who seek admission to the Honors College will be considered by the Honors College Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis. In most situations, evidence of Honors College credit at another post-secondary accredited institution as shown on an official transcript will be considered for Honors College credit in the Daytona State College Honors College.

Generally, no more than 6 hours of Honors College credit may be transferred into the Honors College at Daytona State College. As with Daytona State College Honors College classes, a grade of "B" or better must have been achieved to be eligible for transfer credit.

Any student failing to make steady progress toward the applicable coursework requirements, or make appropriate arrangements for exceptions, will lose the status of "good standing" and/or will be separated from the Honors College. A student separated from the Honors College for failure to complete coursework requirements may petition the Honors College Chair to remain in the Honors College. The Honors College Chair will decide if circumstances warrant the student’s continuation in the Honors College, and the Honors College Chair may impose specific conditions for the student’s continuation. Students failing to adhere to the conditions set by the Honors College Chair will be separated from the Honors College.

Honors College Science Requirements:
Students with non-science majors admitted to the Honors College are required to take at least one Honors College science course. Students may choose from a number of Honors College science courses, including Honors College Integrated Science courses, which are designed specifically for non-science majors. These courses offer an integrated approach to several scientific disciplines and are designed to strengthen scientific understanding among non-science majors in a continually evolving, highly technical world.

Honors College Literature Requirement:
Students admitted to the Honors College are required to take as a minimum the Honors College Literature Course (AML2050) after completing the prerequisite ENC1101. Additionally, students interested in English may choose from a variety of Honors College English courses that have been designed specifically for Honors College students.Typically, Honors College courses in English provide students an opportunity to examine the interrelationships among literature, history, social sciences, philosophy, religion, and the fine arts, and may include collaborative teaching and learning.

Honors College Research Project/Thesis:
The Honors College supports formal undergraduate research in any area from art to zoology. The students’ Honors College Committee will assist and guide the student in the development of a research plan, and identify a faculty mentor as required. The Honors College Research Project/ Thesis is meant to be the culmination of a student's Honors College experience. It gives the student an opportunity to conduct original research guided by an Honors College faculty mentor, and it is required for graduation from the Honors College.

NEW STUDENTS:

Students entering the Honors College as a new, first-semester Daytona State College student must:

  • Complete the Honors College Orientation and Training during the first semester of Honors College, as scheduled.
  • Establish their Honors College Committeewhich consists of "2" Honors College faculty members - one of which will be identified as the "Student’s Committee Chairperson" and "Honors Advisor" during the first semester of Honors College.
  • Successfully complete the Honors College section of Introduction to Statistics (STA2023) and Introduction to Research Methods (PSY2932) by the end of the Freshman year (e.g., 30 credits), or before taking more than 6 semester hours of Honors College courses, whichever occurs first.
  • Other requirements as determined by the Honors College.

CURRENT DAYTONA STATE COLLEGE STUDENTS and TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Students admitted to the Honors College are required to take as a minimum the Honors College Literature Course after completing ENC1101 and ENC1102 to meet the general graduation requirements. Additionally, students interested in English may choose from a variety of other Honors College English courses that have been designed specifically for Honors College students.Typically, Honors College courses in English provide students an opportunity to examine the interrelationships among literature, history, social sciences, philosophy, religion, and the fine arts, and may include collaborative teaching and learning.

HONORS COLLEGE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Students must be in "good standing" with the Honors College
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher• Completion of STA2023, PSY2932, the Honors College Literature Course, and an honors course in Science with a grade of "B" or higher and 6 additional hours of elective honors classes.
  • Successful completion and defense of the Honors College 2-year Research Project/Thesis
  • Passing grade on the Honors College General Education Final Examination
  • Recommendation by signature from the student’s Honors College Committee
  • Completion of all other requirements as identified by the Honors College
